Porcelain Veneers: Discover Your Perfect Smile

Welcome to Dr Rehan Ahmad's guide to porcelain veneers. Here, we'll explore what porcelain veneers are and how they can transform your smile. At Abbey House Dental, we're committed to providing high-quality cosmetic dentistry in Staffordshire.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted from high-quality porcelain material. They are designed to cover the front surface of your teeth, improving their appearance. Veneers can correct a variety of dental imperfections, including:

  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Stained or discoloured teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Misaligned or uneven teeth

Having carried out extensive training in veneers, I ensure that minimal to no damage is done to the natural teeth. Not like Turkey teeth!

I use the latest techniques to ensure your veneers look natural and blend seamlessly with your existing teeth.

The procedure

1- Consultation- This is the most crucial stage of the process. Every patient will have a complete assessment of their mouth which will include x rays and gum assessment. We will discuss with you the end goals and how achievable they are

2- 3d Scan- Following the consultation a 3d digital scan is taken of your mouth- no more horrible moulds!

3- Whitening - At home professional teeth whitening is then provided.

4- Prep appointment - At this visit I will show you a mock up of what your teeth will look like and replicate this in the mouth. Following this I will prepare the teeth a little and send a scan to the lab. I will then place temps and you leave with your new smile (in a different material)

5- Fit appointment - We place the veneers on and show you what they look like. Once we are happy then the veneers are stuck in place.

6- Review - A complimentary review appointment is included to ensure that there are no issues and you are completely happy with the outcome.

Beyond Aesthetics: The Benefits of Veneers

While a beautiful smile is a primary benefit, porcelain veneers offer more than just aesthetics:

  • Improved Confidence: Transform your self-esteem with a flawless smile.
  • Durability: With proper care, veneers can last for many years.
  • Stain Resistance: Porcelain is resistant to staining, keeping your smile bright.
  • Minimally Invasive: A conservative approach to enhancing your smile, leaving you with healthy teeth.

Porcelain Veneers FAQ's

What dental issues can veneers fix?

Porcelain veneers can address:

  • Discolored or stained teeth
  • Worn down or chipped teeth
  • Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

How long do porcelain veneers last?

With proper care, porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 15 years. Longevity depends on oral hygiene habits, lifestyle, and routine dental visits.

What is the procedure like?

Generally, the process involves:

  • Initial consultation
  • Teeth whitening
  • Trial smile and tooth preparation (a thin layer of enamel is removed)
  • Bonding of final veneers after about 1–2 weeks

Are porcelain veneers permanent?

As some enamel may be removed during the preparation process, porcelain veneers can be considered a permanent cosmetic solution. However, there is a risk of them debonding and needing to be 'glued' back in place, or if they are looking worn/chipped then they may require replacement.

Do veneers look natural?

Yes. High-quality porcelain mimics the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth, resulting in a very natural and aesthetic appearance.

Do veneers hurt?

The procedure is generally painless. Local anesthesia is sometimes used during enamel removal if the teeth are very sensitive.

Can I eat normally with veneers?

Yes. Veneers are durable and can handle normal biting and chewing. However, you should avoid:

  • Biting hard objects (e.g., ice, fingernails)
  • Using teeth as tools

Are veneers stain-resistant?

Porcelain veneers are highly resistant to stains from coffee, wine, and smoking. However, maintaining good oral hygiene is still essential.

How do I care for my veneers?

Care tips include:

  • Brush and floss daily
  • Use non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste
  • Avoid grinding/clenching (wear a nightguard if needed)
  • Visit your dentist regularly

Can veneers be whitened if they discolour?

No. Porcelain veneers do not respond to whitening treatments. If discoloration occurs over time, replacement may be needed.
