What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is a minimally invasive method of improving the appearance of your teeth. The treatment is currently really popular as it causes minimal to no damage to your teeth and is reversible.

Some of the issues that an be fixed with composite bonding  are:

Shape

Adding composite to the teeth can enhance the overall shape and even change the appearance, giving a more uniform look. Teeth can be made to look wider, straighter, squarer or even more curved.

Size

Smaller teeth which have been worn down or just grew that way can be built up to make them fit in with the rest of the smile

Colour

Darker teeth can be covered with the composite, making them look lighter

Alignment

Minor discrepancies in the alignment of the teeth can be masked to give the illusion of them being straight

Procedure

1- Consultation- This is the most crucial stage of the process. Every patient will have a complete assessment of their mouth which will include x rays and gum assessment. We will discuss with you the end goals and how achievable they are with CB and other options available to you. I will ensure that all questions/concerns are fully answered before you commit to any treatment.

2- 3d Scan- Following the consultation a 3d digital scan is taken of your mouth- no more horrible moulds!

3- Whitening - At home professional teeth whitening is then provided. This can last between 2-3 weeks depending on the whitening system opted for

4- Bonding - Bonding of the teeth is carried out in a single session

5- Review - A complimentary review appointment is included post bonding to ensure that there are no issues and you are completely happy with the outcome. Any required changes can be made at this point to ensure 100% satisfaction.

Why choose composite bonding?

Composite bonding offers several advantages. It's a relatively quick and non-invasive procedure compared to options like porcelain veneers. It's also more affordable. Composite bonding allows Dr. Ahmad to precisely sculpt and match the shade of the resin to your existing teeth, creating a seamless and natural-looking result.

Composite bonding FAQ's

How long does composite bonding last?

Composite bonding can last up to 5 years, depending on factors such as how well you care for your teeth, the location of the bonding, and your habits (e.g., avoiding habits like nail-biting, chewing on hard objects, or smoking).

Is composite bonding painful?

No. The process is painless. There is no need for anesthesia in most cases and involves very little tooth preparation.

How is composite bonding done?

  • Application: A tooth-coloured resin is applied to the tooth in layers, with each layer being hardened with a special light.
  • Shaping: After the resin has set, the dentist shapes the material to match the natural contours of your tooth.
  • Polishing: The bonded tooth is polished to a smooth, shiny finish that matches the natural shine of your teeth.

How do I care for my bonded teeth?

Good Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss regularly to prevent plaque buildup.

Avoid Staining Foods: Composite resin can stain over time, so it’s best to avoid (too much) coffee, tea, red wine, or tobacco.

Avoid Hard Foods: Don't chew on hard objects (e.g., ice, pens) or use your teeth as tools to open things.

Regular Checkups: Have regular dental checkups to ensure that the bonding is still in good condition.

Can composite bonding be removed?

Yes, composite bonding can be removed or replaced by a dentist if needed. It is a reversible procedure, and no permanent changes are made to the natural tooth structure.

Can composite bonding be used to fix gaps between teeth?

Yes, composite bonding is an effective way to close small gaps between teeth. The dentist can apply bonding material to the teeth to make them appear closer together and more uniform.

Are there any alternatives to composite bonding?

Yes, alternatives include:

  • Porcelain veneers: Thin shells of porcelain placed over the front of the teeth.
  • Crowns: Covering an entire tooth for more severely damaged teeth.
  • Whitening treatments: For discolored teeth, though whitening doesn’t fix chips or cracks.

Can composite bonding be used on crooked teeth?

While composite bonding can help improve the appearance of slightly crooked teeth by reshaping them, it may not be a solution for more severe misalignment. In those cases, orthodontic treatments (like braces or clear aligners) are typically recommended.

Will the bonding stain over time?

Yes, composite bonding can stain, especially if you consume staining substances like coffee, tea, or tobacco. However, modern composites are more resistant to staining than older materials. Regular cleaning and professional polishing can help maintain the appearance of the bonded area.

Can I whiten my teeth if I have composite bonding?

Teeth whitening treatments typically won’t affect composite bonding, as the resin does not respond to whitening agents. If your natural teeth whiten but the bonded teeth remain the same colour, you may want to consider having the bonding replaced or touched up.
